WHAT IS COLORBLINDNESS?
I'm red-green colorblind. This isn't exactly a rare thing: It's estimated that around 7% of the male population, as well as slighty less than 1% of the female population, has some type of color vision abnormality. Red-green colorblindness, also called Daltonism, is the most common type, but there are many other related conditions.
Most [but not all] types of colorblindness are hereditary; specifically, they are caused by some mutation in the many genes that code for Cone Cells. Cone cells hang out in the retina, and come in three types that are each sensitive to different wavelengths of light, and they are what allows us to see in color. It is when certain cone cell types are defective, under-produced, or entirely absent that colorblindness occurs.

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT COLORBLINDNESS
"So you see in black and white, right?"
Not necessarily. Total colorblindness [black, white, and shades of grey only] is quite rare. Most of us can see in some color, and the effects on our vision depend very much on what sort of colorblindness one has.
"Does someone who is red-green colorblind sees red where most people see green, and green where most people see red?"
Nope. The primary issue for most people who are red-green colorblind [or blue-yellow colorblind, or what have you] is that the two colors appear less distinct from one another.
"Are you allowed to drive? What about traffic lights: Can't you not tell between the red and green lights?"
Again, this isn't quite true: I, for one, can tell the traffic light's position because, well, the red light is at the top, and the green one is at the bottom [Don't people notice this??]. Furthermore, traffic lights, at least the ones in Canada, have a green light that's quite blueish [almost to the point of light cyan], while the red lights are a very orangey shade of red.

SOME MORE THINGS
I can quite frequently tell whether something is red or green: it depends on things like how pure the color is, the way the light plays off of a given object, and so on. This probably isn't true for everyone with Daltonism, but I actually have far more trouble with greens and browns [especially when it comes to colored pencils.]
Devious Comments
By the way, if anyone has a funny story or something like that, they should feel free to post it [in fact, I encourage it!]
